with Sarah Mijares Fick

two sessions available:

Nov. 22nd or nov. 23rd

1pm - 5pm in Chatham, NY

In this four-hour workshop, participants will learn how to make their own cold-process soap and ceramic soap dishes.

Participants will create a 2 lb block of soap (about 6 - 8 bars) using lye water and natural oils. Students will customize their soap using a variety of essential oils and natural colorants provided. The soap will be ready to take home that day.

Next, participants will learn how to make their own unique soap dishes, using handbuilding and slab-making skills. Participants will also have the option of painting their pieces with underglazes (colored slip). Group and individual instruction will be given.

Seasonal refreshments will be provided.

After the workshop, the soap dishes will be bisque fired and finished with a studio glaze of the student's choice.

Materials and the cost of firings will all be included. Students will also leave with a cold-process soap recipe. Finished work will be ready for pickup 2 weeks after the workshop. Shipping will be available for an additional fee.

I took Sarah’s hand building class and it was so inspiring! As someone new to ceramics, I had lots of questions and was excited to learn about the various hand building techniques. Sarah is a great teacher, super patient, and so knowledgeable. I can’t wait to take more of her classes and workshops!

Besty

Sarah is an intuitive teacher who takes time individually to impart her wisdom, always leading with grace and patience.

She has studied with some of the greats in the ceramics world and it shows in her creative process and ability to pass on knowledge.

I have learned so much from her in the two hand-building classes I have participated in under her tutelage.

lynn

I really enjoyed my hand building classes with Sarah.  She is thoughtful, talented and very open- qualities which made for a really productive session.  So much so that I chose to continue on for another round.  A definite recommend!

Based in Chatham, NY, Sarah Mijares Fick is a Filipina-American artist whose primary medium is clay.

Initially self-taught, Mijares Fick maintained a personal practice for years before studying under established ceramic artists in New York, New Mexico, South Korea, and Morocco. Her unorthodox education, which spans cultures and continents, has significantly shaped her work, creative philosophy, and respect for earth as a material.

Mijares Fick has exhibited throughout the Hudson Valley at galleries such as The Beck and Mary MacGill, and her work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and Architectural Digest Italia.

Sarah has also been making cold process soap since 2022 -- her signature holiday gift for friends and family.
